Two new ideas I learned:
1. There was a group of 12 Gods called Dii Consentes, who were Jupiter, Juno, Minerva, Vesta, Ceres, Diana, Venus, Mars, Mercurius, Neptunus, Volcanus and Apollo.
2. During the founding of Rome, Gods were "numina", which meant divine manifestations, faceless, formless, but no less powerful. The idea of the Gods becoming beings came with the influence of Etruscans and Greeks.
One tip for how to read/navigate the websites:
The links' caption like "Greek Myths" are key to what the link is about.
One informational feature I found useful and developmentally appropriate for fourth graders were mythman.com, which had Gods and Goddesses for each month of the year. This allows students to chose who they want to research.
Part C
Roman Gods and Goddess
In Vacation Under the Volcano, Jack and Annie go for a little adventure as they travel back in time to Rome during A.D. 79. Today, you will be exploring different sites on mythology, with a strong focus on Gods and Goddesses. Your goal is to learn about the roles of Gods and Goddesses in ancient Roman times. Use the following two websites to answer the two questions per site.
1. Read through all of the Gods and Goddesses in all of the months of the year. Then, choose two God and or Goddesses, you can choose one of each if you like, and write down two interesting facts about them.
2. Compare and contrast the Gods vs. Goddesses using a Venn diagram.
1. Click on the Gods and Goddesses one at a time and pay close attention to their role and job. Chose on God or Goddess that you would have liked to be and explain why.
2. Scroll down to the bottom and click on the link “Roman Mythology”. Read up until it says “Roman Festivals”. Then, write a short summary on the main points of Roman Gods.
Rubric:
3 points: You wrote interesting facts about the Gods and Goddesses you found information
on.
5 points: You made a well thought out Venn diagram based on the similarities and differences
between Gods and Goddesses.
3 points: You made personal connections as to why you would like to be a particular God or
Goddess.
5 points: You collected important key points from the reading and wrote a informative
summary.
